Below you can find our interview. Take a seat and enjoy your reading!!!
- What was the moment that prompted you to the writing of your book?
Ever since I was a child, I have always wanted to become a published author. I used to express my thoughts in poems and admired how authors created different lines of stories. I remember having a small notebook with me most of the time, where I would pour my thoughts onto paper. My mother always encouraged me to write about my experiences. When I was around 18 years old, I wrote my first love story based on realistic fiction inspired by the many books I had read. However, I never submitted it or had anyone review it. After I finished high school, I aspired to major in creative writing at university, but the circumstances back then and the options given, made it difficult for me to achieve this goal. Still, I managed to complete a few elective writing courses while majoring in Elementary Education. In 2002, I wrote another short story for one of the courses which was also left on the shelf next to other books. With time, and the busyness life brings, I somehow put this dream on the side until 2018, when my sister, the catalyst in our family, insisted that I bring my thoughts together and work on a proper book. She put me in touch with my editor, Francesca Walters, and very soon I seriously began pursuing my dream of becoming a published author.
- What characteristics your audience should have to appreciate your book?
This book is more than just a story with a plot and a sequence of events. It focuses on the mindful approach and how it helps pre-teens overcome any stressful and difficult situations. The ideal audience would be good readers who might have certain fears of change. They will find relief and comfort by using the mindful strategies presented throughout the story. It also helps a tween develop new vocabulary and understand certain emotions when faced with significant changes in their lives. Additionally, they can also relate to certain thoughts and behaviours with Hannah the main character in ‘Leaving Sherwood House’. There is also an element of mystery that intrigues the pre-teen’s interest, making them eager in knowing how the story ends. Finally, it serves as a reference for parents of pre-teens, helping them become more aware of practical strategies to support their children in times of difficulty.
- How would you describe your writing style?
Being someone who is practical yet dreamy, resilient yet loving, organized yet flexible, I believe that my writing style reflects a lot about myself and the circumstances I experienced. I have a keen eye for details, allowing me to see and describe things vividly and use my senses to explore the sensations they evoke within me. In ‘Leaving Sherwood House’ there is a lot of descriptive writing, which gives my readers the power to imagine the images I paint with my words, yet through their own perception. My style blends rich, sensory descriptions with a mindful, thoughtful approach, aiming to evoke emotions and create deep connection between the reader and the characters in the story. My writing reflects the inner world of my characters, delving into their thoughts and feelings to provide a comprehensive understanding of their experiences. My practical side ensures that my writing is structed and purposeful with a clear narrative. Finally, my resilience as a person is often mirrored in the characters of ‘Leaving Sherwood House’, who are now facing the challenge of starting a new chapter in their lives.
- How did it feel to see your book published?
I still cannot believe that my book has finally come to life. It feels like I have given birth to my 6th child. This is a great accomplishment, and I am incredibly fulfilled. My heart fluttered with contentment and gratitude. I am in awe of the amazing support I have received from the people around me. The journey to publication has been filled with challenges and triumphs, and seeing the final product is truly surreal. It is a testament to perseverance and dedication, and it reminds me that dreams can come true with hard work and determination. I am also deeply grateful for all the changes I have experienced as a child, as they inspired me to write this book. These experiences have shaped me, and my writing and I hope that my story can help other children going through similar challenges. Seeing my book published is not just a personal victory but a chance to make a positive impact on others. It fills me with immense joy to think that my words might help a child feel understood, a parent feel supported, or a family find new ways to connect and grow together. This accomplishment is a milestone in my life, and I am excited to see where this path leads next.
- Are you working on a new writing project you can tell us about?
I am excited to share that I will be working on the second book under the same series. I want my readers to accompany the Murphy family in their new chapter. I feel it is important for them to see how the family adapted to their new routine and what has worked for them. This continuity offers readers the opportunity to reflect and assess certain strides they take in their own lives. In the upcoming book, I aim to delve deeper into the themes of determination and resilience. The story will explore how the Murphy family, particularly the children, navigate their challenges with steadfast determination. I want to highlight that great accomplishments can be attained when one applies determination and a positive mindset. The new project will feature new characters and situations that will test the Murphy family’s resolve and unity. By showcasing these experiences, I hope to inspire readers to embrace their own journeys with willpower.
