Today we talk about CHECK THE BALKANS, a book by LIZZY MAE VAN SON published with our publishing house Europe Books.
Europe Books had the pleasure of interviewing the author, LIZZY MAE VAN SON, to get to know her better, if there was a particular moment that led her to the writing of her book CHECK THE BALKANS, as well as how she describes her writing style.
Below you can find our interview. Take a seat and enjoy your reading!!!
- Is there a particular moment in your life that led you to the writing of your book? What was that?
Yes, when I was 15 years old I found an old typewriter in the basement that belonged to my grandfather, and I started to type stories about my day and what I have experienced in it. Since then, I always kept a diary, but after I travelled through 49 countries by car I started making little drawings of the places that were stuck in my mind. beautiful sceneries, or dishes that i couldn’t forget the taste of. Since drawing and writing was incredibly meditative, I started making a checklist for myself with drawing and small explanations, so that I would remember the amazing things that I have experienced. Once I finished my book, I showed it to family and friends, my father suggested reaching out to a publisher and this is how this book came to life.
- What characteristics should your audience have to appreciate your book?
This is the perfect book for the modern explorer, on an expedition to foreign lands. The reader should like to travel and be open to experiencing new things. The book is indeed more of a traveller checklist that includes sights to visit, traditional dishes to taste, and local items to bring home.
- How would you describe your writing style?
My writing style is easy to read. I really try to write as I speak, so that the reader, if they travel alone, have me as their companion.
- How was your publishing experience?
My publishing experience was great, this was my first adventure into the publishing world and I really have to thank my Editor Alessia and her whole team for going on this journey with me. They explained all the steps so that we got to a successful print. I am now looking forward to the next steps, which will be promoting the book and going to the book fairs.
- Are you working on a new writing project?
Yes, I actually made a cooking and gardening book called “Check! Grow it – Cook it – Eat it” which is currently being published. I am also working on a collection of little weekend travel guides, the collection includes the islands of Malta, Sicily, Madeira, Cyprus and the Isle of Man. Each guide starts with a small summary of the history followed by a checklist of sights to visit, what dishes to try, what traditional items to buy and a list of the endemic flora and fauna of the island.
