Today we talk about Dysevolution, a book by Sean Hall published with our publishing house Europe Books.
Europe Books had the pleasure of interviewing the author Sean Hall to get to know him better, where and why he found the inspiration to write his book Dysevolution, as well as the significant life experiences that find expression in his book.
Below you can find our interview. Take a seat and enjoy your reading!!!
- Where and when did you find the inspiration to write your book?
This is an interesting question. I have often thought about writing a book, and many times I started, but this was the first time I finished. I have spent my career in human life sciences, with the last 15 odd years in complex research design and clinical trials looking for answers to address chronic diseases. Chronic diseases (also called chronic illnesses) have been my therapeutic focus for nearly 2 decades – the nature of these diseases, their interrelationships, complexities and the serious lack of both diagnostic and therapeutic or treatment options resulted in my team looking for answers. I think it’s important to understand, that chronic diseases impact a significant global population and generally speaking, the best medical response is “management”. If you look at the prevalence numbers, we aren’t managing this situation…After countless hours in patient interviews, clinical trials, and lecturing, I realised the seriousness surrounding patient understanding, inadequacies of current medical practice and treatment models, and frustrations from both patient and healthcare provider. Considering my background, I felt compelled to at least try help the patient, family member, or friend better understand, become better informed, and learn enough to ask the right questions. As I see it, Western medicine is not equipped to probably handle chronic diseases. Today, these diseases sit on the health priority lists of most countries – to me, these diseases represent the greatest health risk to mankind.
- What is the message you want to convey to your readers?
The core message is simple, you need to be an active and willing participant in your health journey. To do this you need to educate yourself, ask the right questions, and stop believing everything you see on TV and social media. Health advice is very individualised based on varying conditions and will take time to address. Be smart, this is your life.
- What significant life experiences find expression in your book?
My career has focused in this area, but the most significant moment was losing my brother to cancer, a slow and painful death. And whilst he had a fantastic medical team that bought him extra time, the outcome was always going to be the same. This is a very personal experience filled with emotion. This experience did however allow me to meet some very innovative researchers wanting to improve cancer outcomes. And whilst these research initiatives could not help my brother, it was the driving factor that had me refocus my career.
- What sensations does it feel to have your book published?
It’s great to see the book published, I sincerely hope the readers see it as a simple practical book designed to empower patients, family and friends.
- Are you working on a new writing project, you can tell us about?
Yes, I am taking the current book and expanding the topic to include behavioural changes due to excessive social media and misinformation, sharing patient stories in an attempt to demonstrate we as a species are de-evolving and not living to our full potential.
Europe Books thanks the author Sean Hall once again for taking the time and answering our questions. We are really pleased to have walked alongside him on the editorial path that led to the publication of his book Dysevolution. We wish him the best of luck for his book and for his future works.
