Today we talk about The Nobody, a book by Luca Robinson published with our publishing house Europe Books.
Europe Books had the pleasure of interviewing the author Luca Robinson to get to know him better, where he found the inspiration to write his book The Nobody, as well as if he sees any resemblances with the protagonist of his book.
Below you can find our interview. Take a seat and enjoy your reading!!!
- Where did you find the inspiration to write your story?
When I was at school in South Africa my favourite subject was English and in particular creative writing. My English teachers were always very encouraging and inspiring. When I emigrated from South Africa to Portugal I found that the school year was very different as in Portugal they have a three-month holiday during the summer months. During my second summer holiday in Lisbon, I found myself sitting in front of my laptop writing a short essay. The story developed and before I knew it, I had written the first chapter of my first novel. The history of World War II has always fascinated me and the thought of what the world would look like today if the Allies had lost the war intrigues me. I often wonder what I would have done if I had been born into such a world. This is where Solus finds himself, fighting to right the wrongs that he faces in a desperate struggle to survive. I am drawn to novels where characters are challenged both physically and emotionally and grow in character as the story develops. I tried to achieve this with my main character who has to deal with and overcome traumatic events.
- What would like to hear from your readers?
This is my first book and I am unsure as to what to expect but I am also very excited. I would love to hear that my readers enjoyed the book and were able to relate to the characters. I think the highest compliment that they could give me is if they asked when I will be writing my next book. As a teenager I have written the novel for young adults and hope that they find the story interesting and thought provoking. Hearing from people who have read the book for the first time will provide a different perspective on it to that given by my family and friends. My hope is that the readers can find some parallels in their own lives to some of the struggles that the characters must endure. Hopefully the more descriptive parts of the story can invoke the imagination of the readers and immerse them in the setting of the novel. I do understand that there will be readers who don’t enjoy the novel and I would be grateful for their feedback as an opportunity to learn and improve my story writing.
- Do you see any resemblances of yourself with the protagonist of your book?
In many ways yes. Solus is a young adult who is very determined and strong willed with a clear vision of what is right and wrong. I do see these characteristics in myself as I enjoy overcoming obstacles and challenges. I would also go to great lengths to protect those that I love. As a teenager I am also growing and learning about myself and trying to shape my character to become the best that I can be. I have drawn on my own sense of humour to develop this part of his persona. I have based the relationship that he has with the other characters on similar relationships that I have or have had with people in my life, including the one with my dog, Zara.
- How did it feel to see your debut book published?
I can still hardly believe it. It feels like just the other day that I began writing my book as a challenge to myself to complete my first novel before I turned eighteen. It is difficult to describe the sense of excitement that I felt when I held the physical book in my hands for the first time. Seeing it for sale on the internet is unreal and extremely nerve wracking. I am anxious for people to start reading it and hopefully post feedback, both good and bad, so I can learn from this experience. This is truly a dream come true and I count myself blessed and humbled. I am so grateful to Europe Books for reading my book, offering to publish it and believing in me.
- Are you working on a new writing project you can tell us about?
Yes, I have decided to try my hand at writing a screenplay. It is very much in the beginning stages, but I have started planning the story and characters. It follows a very different theme and has a darker yet comedic plot. I do have other ideas for future novels which I will work on once my screenplay is finished.
