Today we talk about Escape, a book by Athena Demeter published with our publishing house Europe Books.
Europe Books had the pleasure of interviewing the author, Athena Demeter, to get to know her better, what was the moment that brought her to the writing of her personal story in her book Escape, as well as how her passion for Writing started.
Below you can find our interview. Take a seat and enjoy your reading!!!
- What was the moment that led you to the writing of your personal story?
It was the moment of being amazed at what I have been through and being able to stay strong and centered, also something within me knew that my personal story was not completely personal, rather it is a story of thousands maybe millions of women and even men, of course, the details are different but the human beyond it, who is encountering the feelings, emotions, thoughts, and norms is the same, so I intended to present this story to empower other women, I wanted to show that being a woman means: being a human, not less, but maybe more. I also wanted to show the world a real perspective of being a refugee, how it feels, and what it teaches us. writing my story was not a result of one determined moment I guess, It was more a process of looking into myself and the world around me through the lens of neutrality and love, I wanted to grow, to turn the story into wisdom, and to create a new me, who is not only the one who struggled, but also the one who grows, wins, and succeeds, it was like a mission, it was an important step to librate myself and inspire others.
- What sensations did you feel by ‘reading’ your life on the pages of your book?
Amazed, empowered, and happy, it shows me clearly how I grew as a person and how my entire life has transformed, it reminds me of that part within me that was hurt, broken, and lost, remembering that past and who I was gives me more faith and certainty that no matter how dark and painful a reality seems, there is always a door to the light and transformation, looking back into that past is a reminder to love that woman and child I was, the more I love them, the more my life improves and my awareness expands; embracing the wounds and pain turns them into strength, so reading what was my reality one day helps me to become even stronger, wiser and happier.
- What are the messages you want to send out with your book?
The first message is the necessity to acknowledge that life is so much greater than taking it personally, and sometimes one of us has to break the chain, in this case, I had to break the chain and choose freely despite all the red lines a woman in a very strict society faces then she stops; I chose not to stop, to inspire other women and show them the strength and freedom within us. secondly, I want people to see humans into one another, especially in the case of refugees it seems like there is fear of breaking the ice, thinking about others as if they are from a different planet, the message is humanity unions us.
- How did your passion for Writing start?
Since I was a child, I had that grown part within me that couldn’t find a space to be heard, writing gave me the freedom to express that depth and convert what was bigger than me into words, whenever I felt something begged to be expressed I wrote, through writing I found the space to grow, and live fully without interruption, the first time I wrote I was about six years old, the attention I got from my siblings made me want to hide, I was shameful when I saw what was very natural for me was something big for the family, then again at age eleven I couldn’t find any place to express myself than writing so since that time writing became a habit, I stopped many times because my mother was against it, but here I am, it is just a part of me, I owe writing, I think I will do it always.
- Are you planning to write more books? Can you tell us more about it?
Yes, I am currently writing a book about living a meaningful life, in the book I put all the practices I do to inspire others how to find meaning and live a fulfilling life, the inspiration for this book was the moment I felt your place of residence, your lifestyle, and all other material details are not enough to feel fulfilled and free, meaningful life as an important need for us as human beings, that’s why I started my journey finding meaning, inspired to share it with others. I think I am detected to share all that life teaches me, I believe that love, and light duplicate when they are shared.
