Today we talk about The power within, a book by Jamaal Cox published with our publishing house Europe Books.
Europe Books had the pleasure of interviewing the author Jamaal Cox to get to know him better and where he found the inspiration to write his book The power within. He also told us what specific life experience he brought about himself in this story.
Below you can find our interview. Take a seat and enjoy your reading!!!
- Where did you find the inspiration to write this story?
When I found the inspiration to write “The Power Within”, I was at the lowest point in my life. I was to consume in living in the past. I had many failures and life got the best of me. I thought to myself there is no way I can right these mistakes. I was drinking myself into an early grave. Then one day my dad and I had a heart to heart conversation. Initially it felt surreal because my dad wasn’t an expressive person. When we sat down and spoke, he talked about his childhood and his teenage years. There was one part of his childhood which stuck out the most for me. When he was around 7/8 years old, he used to walk to school bear feet because his mum and dad couldn’t afford shoes. Imagine that? Being so young and having to walk miles upon miles to and from school. And the roads/pavements aren’t exactly smooth. Not only that, but he was also then denied education because his parents couldn’t afford to have him going to school, so he was made to work on the farm instead. When my dad said this to me, I was shocked to say the least. To see where my dad is now compared to how he was when he first started out is unbelievable. I felt like I needed to share his story, and this inspired me. And if this could inspire someone who has previously attempted to commit suicide, surely this story can help other people who are currently being tested by life.
- What are the crucial themes of your book?
The crucial theme to the book is to layout the step-by-step guide to help those who currently can’t make sense of what going on around them. I layout key important principles in which Mr Cox took to overcome certain pivotal moments in his life which could have made or break him. I delve in what challenged he came across and how he used the principle not only to grow through what he went through but also to turn a lost into a massive gain later down the line. The theme is relatable to everyone no matter what walk of life you are taking. Because you can’t run from issues. It’s how you handle them.
- What particularly significant experiences in your life find expression in your novel?
I have several experiences in my life in which I find expression in my novel. But keeping on topic, there was a time when I lost my best friend, and I also lost all my savings which was in the tens of thousands. The reason why I find this significant in ”The Power Within” because there is a point where Mr Cox believed he had lost it all and there was no coming back from all the losses and heartache that had occur. He was in a dark place. But the only way to find the light is if you keep on moving forward. And that is what he did, despite all the trials and tribulation he faced. He kept on moving forward. If he had given up, there would be no way he could have ever seen the Bright-side of life. And this story taught me to keep on moving no matter what life throws at us.
- What is the message you want to send out to the readers?
The message I’m trying to send out is. We all have a past; we all want a better future. But the only way to make a better tomorrow is if we do the best we can do today. It doesn’t matter where you start in life. It doesn’t matter if you are uneducated, you come from a born family, it doesn’t matter what colour, race, religion you are. It doesn’t matter if you have any disabilities. This moment we have right now is a blessing and it’s up to us what we choose to do with this blessing. I also want the readers to follow these principles because they truly do work. It doesn’t matter if you are having a rough day, week, year or decade because if you place your hand on your heart. You feel that? It called a purpose. Never give up.
- Are you planning to write more books?
Yes, I am planning to write a book. But however, I’m still in two minds because the next book I wanted to write about was myself. Although I am at a truly refreshing time period of my life. There are still some parts of my story I am not willing to share but will hold much value in my life story so far. Saying that, I am currently working on it. And there is much thought and effort that is going into my future book. I do believe this book would be just as important even not more. Because it is relatable in today’s climate.
