Today we talk about Outdoor Fun, a book by Joanne Fergusson published with our publishing house Europe Books.
Europe Books had the pleasure of interviewing the author, Joanne Fergusson, to get to know her better, if there was a particular moment that led her to the writing of her book Outdoor Fun, as well as if she had experimented herself the list of advices/tips shed gives in her book and in which occasions.
Below you can find our interview. Take a seat and enjoy your reading!!!
- Is there a particular moment in your life that led you to the writing of your book? What was that?
After writing two previous educational books I reflected on how students gain better results if they have had time outside in the sun. Studies prove this to be true as recreation provides fresh air and balance in a student’s life. Then, continuing to think about the benefits of the outdoors, I reminisced on how I thoroughly enjoyed going outside to play and get active. I decided that it would be great for many families to get outdoors more and be as organised as possible as it makes for a good day. Before writing the OUTDOOR FUN book, I read a few books on family adventure and travel. Reading these books allowed me to think of a few ideas about family outings. Then I realised I could write a short guide mainly using my experience, knowledge and research which could add to the awesome ways families try to enjoy the outdoors. I believe that the characteristics of the people who would appreciate this book are curious, caring, energetic and fun. I know that when our family gets outdoors to enjoy the sunshine, connection time and activity, what has helped us have really an enjoyable experience is when we are positive, happy, thoughtful and energetic. The connection time is lively, the day runs smoothly, and we feel satisfied because we have achieved a great goal.
- What characteristics your audience should have to appreciate your book?
I believe that the characteristics of the people who would appreciate this book is curious, caring, energetic and fun. - Have you experimented yourself the list of advises/tips you give in your book and in which occasions?
One example of a tip that I used on one occasion is when our family went to a miniature train ride day. We had a great day out and planned well. I packed a healthy picnic lunch and an urn. We also brought a cricket set that we used to have a game of cricket on the nearby oval. Bringing items that we needed and could use helped make the day more active and fun! Another time, we planned to travel to a vineyard for a day’s outing. We packed some lunch and drinks, wore the appropriate gear for the day and bought the essential items such as a map, mobile phone and sunscreen. My husband also made sure that the car had enough fuel and that we had enough money. We considered weather, crowds, and travel times. Such preparedness allowed us to have a stress-free time.
- How would you describe your writing style?
I tried to structure this non-fiction work into a short book or guide. I tried to base my writing on experiences and facts. The information I provided was accurate and I aimed to make the writing interesting, informative and creative. The book is set out in a well-planned format, with an introduction at the beginning, followed by sequential chapters with the planning chapter first. The recipe and craft chapter were toward the back then of course summing up outdoor fun ideas with a conclusion chapter.
- Are you working on a new writing project?
No, I have decided to give writing a break. Although I like to write in many ways, I prefer to concentrate on other hobbies such as sewing, card making and reading books in a book club group. Although my son would like for me to write a descriptive book on Lizards, with colourful illustrations and pictures, I don’t seem to have the time. I hope families can have vim, vigor and vitality in their lives!
